The Map is not the Territory
Great advances in science and mathematics are not all achieved by scrawling endlessly on black boards or hunched over desks working out formulas. Some important discoveries happen by accident. Others occur while an individual is in the quiet solitude of a bathtub or taking a stroll through the park. In these moments, the rational brain puts down its tool of logic and deduction and intuitive thoughts spring forward. The rational and intuitive; two aspects of human conscious thinking that are influential in deciphering humanities place in the world and the web of particles and waves that make up this universe. Patterns, connections and relationships are the underlying structures that comprise the ebb and flow of the universe and affect our daily lives. Recognizing these patterns brings us one step closer in understanding the paradoxical nature of the universe and our connection to it. The intent of this work is to investigate patterns, connections and relationships that are underpinnings of the macro and microcosm of this universe. As an artist, I build metaphors out of infinitely complex concepts. These works include images from childhood, verbal descriptions of waves and other unobservable scientific phenomena, and interpretations of particle trails from colliding atoms. This series constructs a visual language that abstractly representsthe complex fabric of the universe.
